5 Things I Love in a Romance

Posted 14 February, 2014 by Amanda / 18 Comments

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day  than by discussing MY FAVORITE ROMANCE ELEMENTS/TROPES. Here’s what makes a good romance for me:

1. The intelligent and/or ahead-of-her-time heroine

I love me some intelligent women. They can think for themselves. They make their own decisions, no matter how difficult they are or how much they tear the heroine apart.

Try A Week to Be Wicked by Tessa Dare or One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean (historical romances)

2. The “I don’t need anyone cuz I’m a strong man” hero who falls ridiculously hard for the heroine

The fall is one of my favorite parts of the entire story.

Try Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison (paranormal romance) or A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah MacLean (historical romance)

3. Hate to lust (to love)

The sparks. *fans them all away*

Try On the Edge by Ilona Andrews (paranormal romance) or Shadowdance by Kristen Callihan (historical paranormal romance)

4. Danger

I like a little extra somethin’ somethin’ in my romance books. Something that draws the characters together, physically or emotionally. Danger does that.

Try Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks (historical romance) or That Voodoo You Do by Jodi Redford (paranormal romance)

5. The happily ever after

Duh? I mean, this is the ultimate goal in romance books.

Try Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (YA contemp) or Once Upon a Winter’s Eve by Tessa Dare (historical romance novella) or pretty much any Sarah MacLean.

What do YOU love in a romance and what are you favorites?

  1. YES AMANDA! I second every single thing on this list! Dragon Bound is one of my all time favorites because Dragos is just so big and bad and watching him fall for little Pia was amazing. Have you read Kinked yet? If you love hate to lust, that one is EPIC! Aryal and Quentin are a sexy, sexy antagonistic pair. I want to go re-read all the books you listed now. Weekend read-a-thon, here I come!

    • I haven’t read Kinked yet, BUT I do have it sitting on my shelf. I’ll have to read it soon. (But after Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare because it finally came in at the library. YAY!)

  2. I completely agree I love watching the strong man fall really hard for the girl. I love the fall and all of the moments that lead the man up to falling for her. I also like strong heroines in my books who can show the man a thing or two. A woman before her time is usually a historical romance thing and I agree that Sarah MacLean does that really well.

I am a huge fan of the hate to lust storyline as well! Those are the best! If they keep up a certain level of snarkiness even after the fire has ignited then it’s all the better for me! I do like the tortured, brooding hero as well. :-)

  4. Amelia

I agree with all of these! I also enjoy a really good story, my favorite romances are the ones that I get sucked into the story and then wham! I get hit with a hot steamy scene and remember I’m reading a romance.

I also wanted to say, that while I do love the intelligent heroine, I can’t stand when they take that trait too far and make her stubborn and hardheaded. You know, the one’s that protest too much about everything.
