Mara Dyer once believed she could run from her past.

She can’t.

She used to think her problems were all in her head.

They aren’t.

She couldn’t imagine that after everything she’s been through, the boy she loves would still be keeping secrets.

She’s wrong.

In this gripping sequel to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the truth evolves and choices prove deadly. What will become of Mara Dyer next?

I’m convinced Michelle Hodkin is evil.

Thoughts on The Evolution of Mara Dyer

I’m convinced that Michelle Hodkin is evil. And that she writes a damn good book.

When I finished book one, all the way back in 2011, I remember wanting to reread it as soon as I finished. Like Unbecoming, The Evolution of Mara Dyer is confusing and addictive. I’m not really sure what happened, but I know I need more of it. Despite the long span between books, I had no problems reorienting myself in Mara’s world; the recapping is subtle and effective.

I’m torn about this book: it was full of non-answers and being jerked around, and yet, I didn’t care. I knew it, and it didn’t matter. Noah and Mara chase answers for what’s happening to Mara (seriously, WHAT is happening?) and one answer only leads to a million more. Approximately. It had me turning pages and reading as fast as I could.

Mara’s world is intriguing. Paranormal, with a heavy dose of “maybe it’s just all in Mara’s head.” But it’s not. Is it? WHAT IS GOING ON? (Rinse. Repeat.)

The mystery only deepens in The Evolution of Mara Dyer, and the thread that began in Unbecoming is unraveling more and faster now. But we still don’t have answers. (Or do we? There are too many unknowns, but just enough unknowns to keep us propelling forward because, seriously, WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MARA?)

I think, maybe, I said that The Evolution of Mara Dyer would make or break my enjoyment of the series at a whole. And I think it makes it. I need the third book. And then, when I’ve read the entire trilogy, I want to read the books all over again.

  1. YES AMANDA!! Michelle Hodkin is evil. And a genius. A true evil genius:) I have no idea what’s going on in this world either, but I absolutely have to find out. Like you, I will be devouring the third book and then going back and starting all over just to pick up on the clues I know are there but that I completely missed the first time around. SO GOOD.

    • I think there are subtle nuances to all these books. And because you DON’T KNOW what’s going on, you don’t pick up on them. I think each time you read the book, there would be something new to learn or see. And that is awesome. Evil genius!

  2. LOL!! That first statement made me giggle!! SO MANY QUESTIONS with this series — which I both love and hate. It’s a head stomper for sure. And I’m not sure I like it but I want more. Huh. Yeah, I’m going to agree with your statement. Michelle Hodkin is definitely evil.

  3. Ahaha, yes, SO EVIL. I read Evolution of Mara Dyer all in one sitting. After finishing, I walked around the house in a listless and confused daze for like 10 minutes, because my brain was just like I AM DONE. And also because I could not wrap my head around the fact that I had OVER A YEAR before the next one. Not cool.

I totally agree with you. I am at work and i just finished it and I have to keep my cool face on, but I’m totally freaking out. I’m so done, but i need the third one.

Oh my gosh Michelle Hodkin is totally evil.

I really enjoyed the first book, but it took me awhile to get used to it and to understand what was happening, ya know? I was hooked once I finished the first book. Mara Dyers story was my life at the point.

The second book was intriguing and it seemed like all my questions were going to be answered and everything was going to be okay. Until it got to the end and I am so speechless and I cant fathom what has happened. I literly just finished the book 5 minutes ago and I need to vent about this situation.

Like Dr. Kells was in on it the whole time and my mind is just blown! I NEEEED the third book to come out like right now. I need to know what the heck is up with Dr. Kells and if Noah is really alive.

I am 1000% hooked now. Well played Michelle Hodkin, well played. Nice twist ending, I seriously wasnt expecting that.
