When I was on WP.com, many people were unfamiliar with getting around WordPress blogs, and so I wrote a post about getting around the site. Now that I’m on WP.org, most of those things still apply, but my general layout has changed, and so I’m writing a quick how-to for subscribing, commenting, and navigating. I hope this helps!
Subscribe
Want to keep up to date with On a Book Bender posts? Click on the RSS button under the Find Me widget to find my RSS. All my links (Goodreads, Twitter, Facebook and email) can be found in the same widget. And underneath all those you can subscribe by email if that’s more your thing. If you’re looking for Kelly’s contact info, you can find that in the Contact page.
Comment
In addition to your comment, WordPress has fields for your name and website, so there is no need to leave a link back. And! You can reply to any comment, and comments are threaded (up until 10 deep anyway). I also now have a plugin that will notify you when someone responds to your comment (I often do!) if you so choose.
Note on commenting: You’ll find my comment reply notification email talks about giraffe shifters. For further explanation of this silliness, consider reading this post.
Navigation
In order to clean up my sidebar area, I’ve moved a lot of information into pages, which you can find in the menu above. Here is an idea of everything you can find in the menu:
- About
- The blog (our schedule, the typical genres we read, the blog’s mission statement)
- Me (includes places I’ve guest posted or appeared)
- Kelly
- Review Policy (explains how we approach reviewing; we are currently NOT accepting unsolicited review requests)
- Reviews (alphabetized by author)
- Enjoyment Scale (explanation of my ratings)
- Features (includes list of bookish posts)
- Links (where On a Book Bender is listed around the web, other helpful links)
- Reading challenges (current year’s challenges)
- All Series, All Summer
- Unbreaking the Shelves
- Midwestern Book Bloggers (external site)
- Bout of Books (external site)
- My copy-editing business (external site)
- Reading challenges (current year’s challenges)
- Contact
And if that doesn’t get you the information you might be looking for, you can search the categories by using the drop down menu in the sidebar, or you can do a site search, which is also in the sidebar.

You made it! I’m still not sold on WP myself so I’ll be interested to hear how it works for you.
The blog looks good. Congrats! :)

I love WP. I started off on WP.com, then eventually made the switch to WP.org. I’ve been on Blogger before, but… it’s just not as good (in my opinion).
